Hi! I’m Maile Alicia

Maile Alicia Designs (MAD) was born from a promise made on a road trip over two decades ago. Somewhere between California and Indiana, while antiquing through small towns with my family, I stopped at the front of one shop that was filled with handmade rocking chairs. In one sat a woman working with a long needle and crochet thread; not knitting, not crochet, but something unfamiliar. She invited me to sit beside her and began teaching me the art of needle tatting: a delicate craft of knots and loops forming lacy rings and chains. Before I left, the woman handed me the needle and thread and asked for a promise; to keep learning, to teach someone else, and to gift a starter kit to another maker. It was a quiet but powerful moment, one that planted the seed for a lifelong commitment to preserving handcrafts. Over the last 20 years, I have honored that promise. I’ve learned, expanded, and taught a wide range of heritage crafts; from embroidery and sewing to surface pattern design and digital illustration. I have given starter kits to students, taught classes, and built a creative practice rooted in generosity and tradition.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I pivoted from teaching in-person sewing and arts camps to offering online instruction, continuing to share my skills and build community from home. I’m parenting, caregiving, and business-building with grace and grit, proving that creativity can thrive even in the most demanding seasons of life. Today, I’m a full-time caregiver, MFA student, and creative entrepreneur. I balance caregiving, education, and business with a rhythm that honors both her family’s needs and her artistic ambitions. MAD was founded to reclaim creative autonomy and to ensure that heritage crafts remain alive, accessible, and joyful. Identifying as a “heirloom crafter” and proud member of the Apocalyptic Guild of Crafts, I hope to bring a unique blend of whimsy, symbolism, and technical excellence to her work. MAD is a creative studio built from necessity, nurtured by heritage, and driven by imagination. It combines surface pattern design, embroidery, sewing, and digital illustration into playful, symbolic collections that celebrate the handmade.
With over 500 original designs available on Spoonflower, Raspberry Creek, and Etsy, MAD is expanding into SVG and embroidery formats to meet the evolving needs of modern makers. Tutorials and patterns are being filmed to reach a wider audience, and each design is rooted in personal and cultural narratives, connecting past to present, maker to maker. “MAD is more than a business; it’s a living extension of Maile’s values. It honors the creative spark and the caregiving heart. It’s intentional, joyful, adaptive, and deeply personal. Through MAD, Maile continues to keep her promise: to teach, to share, and to ensure that the beauty of handcraft endures.”
